Film reviewer Roger Ebert wrote that Bruckner manages the difficult film with total conviction. Bruckner was awarded the Independent Spirit Award nomination for "Best Female Lead" for this part. She was raised with her three siblings, one brother and two sister. Hungarian was the first language she learned and was regularly practiced to achieve the fluency. Bruckner was born in Hollywood California to a Hungarian father and the Russian mother, who later divorced her paternal grandfather was German. In Hungary, her parents initially met before moving to America in 1984 via a refugee settlement in Italy. There are two sisters as well as an older brother.
